In addition to the 1000-Armed Kannon, other esoteric deities carry this object, including Fukūkenjaku Kannon (a multi-armed esoteric form of Kannon who carries a lasso to catch straying souls and lead them to salvation), and Fudō Myō-ō (the leader of the esoteric Mantra Kings, who holds a lasso to bind up the wicked or keep people from straying).
The lasso also represents the Precepts (need to give source) in some traditions.

A rope, made from five different coloured strands (blue, yellow, red, black and white). It often has a metal ring at one end, and one or more prongs, like a *kongousho 金剛杵, at the other.

Found as an attribute *jimotsu 持物 held by Buddhist deities including *Fudou Myouou 不動明王, *Fukuukenjaku Kannon 不空羂索観音, Kongousaku bosatsu 金剛索菩薩 and *Senju Kannon 千手観音.
In ancient India the kenjaku was used as a snare to capture animals, and it was adopted by Buddhism as a symbol of the salvation of mankind. A good example of a figure holding a kenjaku is the Fudou Myouou in Henjouji 遍照寺 (10-12c), Kyoto.

Hibutsu 秘仏 secret statues

Secret Buddha Statues are enshrined in special tabernacles called zushi 厨子 and are shown at regular intervals to the public. Some are shown every year, others every seven, seventeen, thirtythree or hundred years only. Some are never shown.
This can be a replica of the original hidden statue or a different one altogether.

Usually a substitute statue ("stand before it" maedachi 前立) is placed in front of this tabernacle and can be venerated in prayers at any time.

Halo found on Buddhist images, representing light said to be emitted by the Buddha *gokou 後光. In sculpture, a wooden or metal kouhai was attached to the back of the figure, sometimes decorated in openwork *sukashibori 透彫.

Kouhai were used in Japan from the Asuka period, usually made of bronze or gilt bronze, and were named according to their shape and design. One of the earliest examples is the halo on the Shaka sanzonzou 釈迦三尊像 (623) in Houryuuji 法隆寺, which is known as ikkou sanzon kouhai 一光三尊光背 (the single-light triad halo, see *ikkou sanon 一光三尊), because all three figures of the triad are enclosed in a single halo. The halo surrounds the figures completely *kyoshinkou 挙身光 and has a pointed top, giving it the name *funagata kouhai 舟形光背 (the boat-shaped halo).

Individual standing figures of the same period had round halos *enkou 円光 as on the Four Heavenly Kings, Shitennou 四天王 in Houryuuji *Kondou 法隆寺金堂, or jewel-shaped halos *houjugata kouhai 宝珠形光背, like that of the Kudara Kannonzou 百済観音像 in Houryuuji Daihouzouden 法隆寺大宝蔵殿.

In the Tenpyou period, the double-round halo *nijuu-enkou 二重円光 became popular. A round head-nimbus *zukou 頭光 is attached to a round body-nimbus *shinkou 身光, as on the Miroku Bosatsu 弥勒菩薩 in Houryuuji Daihouzouden 法隆寺大宝蔵殿.

Halos decorated with Chinese foliage design *karakusamon 唐草文 and a thousand miniature buddhas senbutsu kouhai 千仏光背 were also produced in the Tenpyou period. A good example is *Rushanabutsu 盧舎那仏 (779) in Toushoudaiji 唐招堤寺, Nara.

In the Heian period halos with a decorated base *koukyaku 光脚 became popular. *Ten 天 and *Myouou 明王 Myo-O figures had halos with flame designs *kaen kouhai 火焔光背.

The earliest examples of wooden halos *itakouhai 板光背 date from the late 9c, and these were often painted with flames, karakusamon, and small manifestations of buddha *kebutsu 化仏, as on the Shaka ryuuzou 釈迦立像 in Murouji 室生寺, Nara. In the 12c nijuu enkou were surrounded by a large outer boat-shaped halo of openwork flying apsaras figures *hiten kouhai 飛天光背. The model for this style was the Amida Nyoraizazou 阿弥陀如来坐像 (1053) by Jouchou 定朝 in Byoudouin 平等院, Kyoto.

Other styles characteristic of the late Heian period were the single free-standing ring *rinkou 輪光 like that of the *Kichijouten 吉祥天 in Joururiji 浄瑠璃寺, Kyoto, a halo with radiating spokes like a wheel, houshagata kouhai 放射形光背, seen on the Amida Nyoraizou in Kanzeonji 観世音寺, Fukuoka prefecture; and the *mibu kouhai 壬生光背 named after the Jizou Bosatsu 地蔵菩薩 in Mibudera 壬生寺, Kyoto (now lost).

In the Kamakura period various designs of kouhai with openwork decoration continued to be produced, as well as halos decorated with small figures representings the followers of Buddha *kenzoku 眷属, as on the central Senju Kannon 千手観音 in Rengeouin 蓮華王院, Kyoto. Another form of halo called *ensoukou 円相光 enclosed the nijuu ensou in a large outer circle, often seen on Aizen Myouou 愛染明王 figures (1247), for example in Saidaiji 西大寺, Nara.

This grouping is common in esoteric Buddhism. Ceremonies in front of these statues were used to pray for the destruction of a personal enemy or for political intrugues, for example during the war of the Genji and the Heike, where five priests at the temple Ninna-Ji in prayed to these five statues (godan no hoo 五壇の法) to win the war.

are five great Myoo placed in five directions, which is discussed in a set of two scrolls of "Ninnou Gokoku Hannya Haramitta Kyou" translated by a Chinese Buddhist priest Amoghavajra (Fukuu) and a scroll of "Shomuge Kyou" and consists of
Fudo (center), Kozanze (Gozanze) (east), Gundari (south), Daiitoku (west) and Kongoyasha (north ).

The images of Godaison are drawn as five separate paintings have been seen from the early Heian period and some examples such as Godaison-zo held at To-ji Temple in Kyoto are known. However, just like this painting, the style of Godai Myoo represented in one painting (Fudo Myoo at the center and others in each of the four directions) was established later than that and the images in Hakubyou (ink line painting) first appeared in the period between the late Heian period and the early Kamakura period.

In terms of the style, Fudo has a similar but more ample body than the Ao Fudo held in Shorenin in Kyoto and the faces are similar. It indicates an iconography of Genchoyou (Gencho's style). The halo with flames on the back is divided into seven parts as if they were the flames of a Karura (a fire-breathing creature from Japanese Hindu-Buddhist mythology). Two images of Doji have a style mixed with those held in Horaku-ji Temple in Osaka and Ruri-ji Temple (also known as Ruridera) in Hyogo. (Seitaka Doji is the same as Ni-Doji with a style of Hakubyo Genchoyou held at Godai-ji Temple.) The iconographical features of other four Myoo are very similar to the four Myoo excluding Fudo among Godaison in Godai-ji Temple and is also the same as the iconography of Enjinyou contained in "Besson Zakki." In a word, this painting was drawn in a newly established style by combining multiple styles of iconographies.

Unlike Ao Fudo, no colorful or fine patterns are applied to Fudo Myoo. The expressions such as the heavy colors, strongly applied Kumadori (shading) and expressive ink lines are rather different from the Buddhist paintings in the Heian period and indicate unique the features of the powerfully expressed Buddhist paintings in the Kamakura period.

Godai-son 五大尊 The Five Great Wisdom Kings

They are incarnations of the five Widsom Buddhas. Picture scrolls with these five deities, either five scrolls or one depicting them all, are called
"The Venerable Five
" (godai son 五大尊).

West : Dai-iitoku 大威徳明王
North : Kongoo Yasha 金剛夜叉明王

In the Tendai sect, Uzusama Myo-O 鳥枢渋摩明王 is mostly depictede in the North. This version comes from China of the T'ang period, not from India. Other scriptures state that the five great wisdom kings where established in Japan.

Fire ceremonies for adverting misfortune (sokusai goma and saito daigoma)
The fire ritual is a form of deep Shugendo prayer.

Rituals of prayers: Service for the sun, moon, stars and small shrines, "goma" fire ceremonies for averting misfortune, rites for various deities.



Meguro Fudo

On the 28th there are also great fire rituals (goma kuyoo 護摩供養) at different hours during the day, where you can get your talismans and other belongings consecrated by Holy Fire. I once bought one talisman with the number of our car for Traffic Safety and the priest would not hand it over until it had passed the Holy Smoke. Since that day, we never had an accident with that car.

Interpreting art is a tricky, uncertain endeavor, particularly when the gods are involved. Take, for example, Fudo Myo-o, an esoteric Japanese Buddhist deity whose likenesses date back to the twelfth century. He was sometimes confused with Ususama, another Buddhist deity who was regarded as a devourer of stinking matter.

As a result, statues of poor Fudo Myo-o were occasionally placed near bathrooms in Buddhist temples. What is pleasing to one deity is perhaps not so enjoyable to another.

For millennia, religious statues, paintings, and diagrams have been created not only as objects to be admired, but also as tools for maintaining relations with ancestors, gods, and the dead transform- ing the human body and soul; and foreseeing and changing the future. But in spite of the original intentions behind them, they are―as in the case of Fudo Myo-o― subject to reinterpretations over time.

Even relatively current works can leave us scratching our heads, wondering what their creators intended. The 1918 plumbing contraption titled God, attributed to Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven and Morton Schamberg, is intended to be a statement on technology, but leaves us to wonder what sort of statement the artists intended to make about a Supreme Being. We know from records that Freytag-Loringhoven wrote to Solomon Guggenheim that "God should take lessons on production efficiency from Henry Ford." Still, the meaning of "God" in any work of art lies within its beholders.

Saint Mokujiki was born in Marubatake in 1718. He converted to Buddhism when he was 22 years old, and received his ordination with the name Mokujiki at the temple Rakanji in Tokiwa at the age of 45.
Mokuji underwent a type of severe ascetic training that does not allow the consumption of grains, fish, boiled food and salt. He kept to the rules of this training for his entire life.

He went on a pilgrimage throughout Japan until he was 93, and carved more than 1000 Buddist images during this time.

In his old age, when he had passed 80 years, he realized that people need something king and gentle to become kind themselves.

「みな人の心を丸くまんまるに  
どこもかしこも丸くまん丸」

"Peoples hearts need to be all round,
everything needs to be all round and smooth!"

He then started carving Buddha statues with the special smile on their faces, for which he is now so famous. The smile and roundness makes his statues so different from the ones of his fellow Enku.

From temple Enzoo-Ji, Joetsu Town, Niigata
木喰上人は、俗姓を伊藤といい、享保3年山梨県に生まれ、22歳で仏門に帰依し、その後45歳で木喰戒(火食を絶ち、五穀をさける)を受け、92歳でこの世を去るまで、5度の日本回国を行いました。
この仏像は、文化3年円蔵寺で彫られたものです。上人は、昼、寺に集まる人々の病気や苦悩の相談相手となり、夜は黙々とナタをふるい、一夜に最高3体を刻んだと言われています。

円空作不動明王坐像

総高29.2cmの杉の一木造りで頭頂部に蓮華をいだき、左肩に弁髪をたらし右手に宝剣、左手に羅索を持ち岩に座っている。円空仏は北埼玉地区にはほとんどなく珍しい。
